Commissioner Ken Matthews reports:
My time at the Navy Everyman’s Recreation Centre at Homebush has certainly been a blessing. Near the Centre’s front door we placed Christian posters, tracts and Bibles. Every sailor knows this place is a Rec. Centre but it is also a house of God.
I am encouraged to see the Bible stack shrinking, also seeing sailors reading and picking through the tracts. I am however challenged in breaking through the postmodern idea that God is whatever you want Him to be. Under the leading of the Holy Spirit, I have taken up the fight against this deception with sailors. Through His guidance, I have been able to share that God in Jesus, His
Son, is the ‘One and Only’ way to heaven, citing Jesus’ own words in John 14:6.
One young sailor who initially disagreed with me on this eventually came back and took a Bible. As he did he shook my hand which was a great honour. Another came in one day and was stricken by the fact alcohol was ruining his life. This is not uncommon with sailors, many of whom for centuries have prided themselves in how much strong drink they can take. I asked this young sailor what was important to him and found out he had once had a relationship with the Lord. I shared the Evangecube with him, inviting him to reaffirm his faith. He responded and we prayed together. Since then he has come back several times and we have shared in Bible readings. Others who are lonely come in regularly and we receive them as friends as they share their hopes and dreams. In everything we strive to create an opportunity for them to speak about where they are at with God. Finally I have been abundantly blessed by the quiet and dedicated ministry of Reps Bob and Roni Palmer, and for their refusal to walk away from this ministry when at times difficult and lonely. No matter what, they express God’s love for these sailors by making sure they are available whenever they can be, and at times, visit the sick in hospital on their weekends. It is this kind of constant care that makes Everyman’s the vital ministry it is.
