OUR REPS

Assistant Commissioner

George Thomas

1RTB Blamey Barracks, Kapooka NSW

George Thomas

George has been active with Everyman’s at Army Recruit Training Centre (ARTC) Kapooka near Wagga since 2004.

George is currently is team leader and one of several Reserve Everyman Reps who supports the Fulltime Rep at this busy Recruit Training base by operating the Brew Truck for recruits at the firing range and also while they are on field exercises. The operation of the Recreation Centre ensuring the recruits have a welcoming environment is also an important function. Like many Reps, George has undertaken training in suicide prevention through Defence Force programmes as well as enjoying the wider training and development delivered through Everyman’s.

While the intensity and limited duration of the training means contact with each recruit is restricted, the Everyman’s team at Kapooka establishes a very positive relationship with all recruits. This allows for continued relationship development and further Christian outreach as these soldiers are posted to other military establishments where other Everyman or Sallyman operations can continue to minister to these soldiers. The development of relationships with the staff at Kapooka is a particular interest. The team also seek to maintain a close co-operation with the Military Chaplains at Kapooka.

During 2017 George was deployed for four months as part of Operation Accordian operating in the Middle East Region.  He was part of HQ Joint Task Force 633 based at Al Minhad Air Base but also was deployed forward to Afghanistan where he engaged with ADF personnel involved in operation Resolute Support at the HQ in Kabul and at the base at HK International Airport and at the Afghan Officer Training  base at Qargha near Kabul.

During his 28 years Army Reserve service the value of EWS to serving personnel was evident to George and his involvement commenced following the request for assistance from the then Full Time Rep and encouragement from long time EWS supporters in his Uniting Church Wagga Wagga congregation.

George and his wife Kay live in Wagga while their four adult children have now established careers elsewhere. George and Kay are lifelong Christians with a strong interest in social justice and in the welfare of ADF personnel returning from operational service.
